Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Government will submit a formal proposal for construction of a new diaphragm wall for the multi-purpose Polavaram project to NITI Aayog in Delhi on July 27.

The State Cabinet adopted a resolution on Thursday evening to this effect on the recommendation of four-member exports’ committee set up by the Jal Shakti Ministry after the swearing in of TDP-NDA Government led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on June 12.

The committee comprised international experts from the United States and Canada, who recently visited the Polavaram project site.

After visiting Polavaram dam site, Naidu later published a white paper on how project was neglected by the erstwhile YSRCP Government, said the repair of diaphragm wall will cost Rs 446 crore as against Rs 990 crore for building a new wall. The white paper blamed the decision for reverse tendering and neglecting flood control measures leading to heavy damage to diaphragm wall.

The Cabinet meeting chaired by Naidu adopted separate resolutions thanking the Centre for promising to arrange Rs 15,000 crore for rebuilding Amaravati and declaring that it will take up responsibility for early completion of Polavaram project. The first phase of Polavaram project is scheduled to be completed by March, 2026.
